Journey along the dramatic Kaligandaki Valley, meet local communities in Thakkhola, and explore the origins of the Himalayas where tectonic plates converge. Experience high-energy adventures with shaligram hunting, a session with an Amchi traditional healer in Jomsom, and a guided excursion to Muktinath Temple. Stay in the last Bon village, enjoy serene walks in Naurikot, and discover the mystical landscapes of Kagbeni Valley under the shadow of Nilgiri Mountain. Dramatic vistas and Himalayan energy define this unforgettable region.

Wellness in Pokhara

Nestled beside serene lakes and framed by snow-capped Himalayan peaks, Pokhara Valley is a sanctuary for wellness and reflection. Visit the iconic Peace Stupa and soak in panoramic mountain vistas, then retreat to a wellness-focused lakeside resort for yoga, meditation, and holistic therapies. Chitwan National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal’s subtropical lowlands, Chitwan captivates with lush jungles and extraordinary wildlife. Engage in yoga sessions along riverbanks, spot rare species such as one-horned rhinoceroses and gharial crocodiles, glide peacefully along rivers in a canoe, and enjoy thrilling jungle safaris with expert naturalists. Ethical interactions with rescued, chain-free elephants offer an unforgettable nature experience. This is a space to fully embrace the healing power of nature.

Lumbini

Step into the birthplace of Buddha, the spiritual origin of Buddhism, and wander sacred monasteries from around the world. Lower Annapurna: Trekking in the Annapurna Region is matchless in spring (March to May). The weather is warm during the day and cold at night. The average daytime temperature is 12°C to 20°C (54°F to 68°F) and it can drop to freezing temperatures during night. The forests are green, and rhododendrons bloom, making the trail vibrant. It is a busy time of the year and the trails will be full of trekkers. It’s important to prebook the lodges.

Lowlands: The average temperature ranges between 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). Spring is an excellent time for wildlife sightings. The pleasant weather and active animals make it easier to spot various species, including tigers, rhinos, deer, and birds.

Lower Annapurna: This region receives a lot of rainfall in general, so monsoons will be extremely wet and humid, with temperatures ranging from around 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The downside of the monsoon is hovering clouds affecting visibility and slippery trails with leeches all along. The roads leading up to the trails can be affected by rockfall and landslides. While early June and late September are still advisable for trekking, July and August are out of the option. Not many people trek during the peak monsoon, so hotels aren’t fully operational.

Lowlands: The average temperature ranges 30°C to 40°C (86°F to 104°F). The hot and humid weather during the monsoon season can make wildlife sightings more challenging. Some animals may seek shelter and stay hidden in the dense vegetation due to the frequent rains.

Lower Annapurna: It is the most popular time of the year to trek with clear skies, mild temperatures, and relatively stable weather conditions. The monsoon rains will have subsided, and visibility of the mountain ranges is excellent. There’s a perfect mix of greenery and colors in the hills and forests. Sunrise and sunsets are breathtaking. The temperatures range between 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) and drop lower with increasing elevation. As the region is very accessible, trails and lodges are extremely busy this time around.

Lowlands: The average temperature ranges between 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). Autumn is another good time for wildlife viewing. The weather is pleasant, and the grasslands are less dense, making it easier to spot animals like rhinos, elephants, and various bird species.

Lower Annapurna: Winter is a great time to trek in the lower Annapurnas. As we don’t reach significant elevation, the mountains look sparkling white on non-gloomy days. The temperatures go between 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F) during daytime and can go lower at night. It is cold, but still very doable with the right preparation. Some parts of the trails can get slippery due to frost and patchy snow. The trails are not very busy and lodges are operational.

Lowlands: The average temperature ranges from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Winter is another favorable time for wildlife sightings. The cooler temperatures encourage animals to come out into the open, making it more likely to spot them near rivers and watering holes. It is also a good time to spot migratory birds that travel all the way from Siberia. The days with dense low fogs are extremely cold and can compromise visibility.

Transportation

City Flights Flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara operate throughout the day. The planes are bigger than the mountain aircrafts and accommodate 42-80 passengers. Buddha, Shree and Yeti Airlines are some of the common carriers.
Vehicle We provide reserved private vehicles to drive you around for pick-ups and drop-offs as per the itinerary. The vehicle type (car, jeep, van, etc) will be allocated depending on the number of people and terrain.

Food & Water

Food Lunch and dinner are left out from price includes to give you full flexibility on meals, depending on your appetite and preference. Our hotels have a decent selection of food and drink options. For vegetarians and vegans, or if you have any other dietary requirements, please let us know at the time of booking so we can make arrangements.
Water Carrying your own water bottle/ hydration pack is mandatory. It is always best to have a bottle (1.5-2 liters) during the trek. You can refill your bottle with at lunch spots and hotels. We highly discourage buying plastic water bottles during the trek for environmental reasons.
Snacks to carry It is recommended to bring snacks (like chocolates, dry fruits, etc) and energy bars to munch on during the trek. You will come across several shops on the trails (especially in the lower elevations) to buy water, snacks and toiletries.
Shops along the way You will come across several well-stocked shops on the trails (especially in the lower elevations) to buy water, snacks and toiletries. There are also many shops selling tea and beverages in between lunch stops.

Crew

Guide One lead guide and assistant guides (depending on the number of trekkers) will accompany you on the trek. All our team members are highly experienced in the mountains, with adequate trail knowledge and first-aid training. Feel free to reach out to the team for any kind of queries or emergencies.
Porter A porter is someone who carries your luggage. They will either accompany you from the city or tag along directly on the day of your trek. The maximum weight one porter carries is 25kgs/55lbs.

Money

Extra Costs to Expect Possible expenses, other than meals, could be drinks, laundry, tipping, and shopping. Please make sure you have read the Price section thoroughly so you know what you might need to pay for while traveling.
Emergency Fund Our trips are planned to the last detail. However, there might be unforeseen circumstances arising from factors beyond our control (like political unrest, strikes, bad weather, natural calamities, bad road conditions, airport closures, flight cancellations, etc). For this reason, please set aside Rs. 10,000 as reserve fund.
Currency You are advised to carry the local currency (Nepali rupees) for the trails as all the service providers transact in rupees.
ATMS and Credit cards In most areas outside the cities, cash is the more reliable and widely accepted payment method. While you’ll have the option to pay by card at some hotels and eateries in popular towns, it’s important to note that card transactions can sometimes be unreliable. Additionally, you will be charged an extra 3-4% transaction fee on top of the amount if you choose to pay by card. As for ATMs, you will come across a few in major towns but we recommend you to carry enough cash during the trek.
Tipping A service charge with tips is included by most hotels and eateries in their bills. You are welcome to give some gratuities to the trekking crew if you like their service. A good reference is around USD 10-15 per day for the guides and USD 5-10 per day for the porters. Feel free to tip higher if you love their service. You can tip either in Nepali rupees or US dollars. Generally, you chip in money as a group and tip your guides and porters on the last day of your trek over dinner.
Cancellations and Refund In case of cancellations due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, we will reschedule at no extra cost. However, any extra cost incurred and extra charges because of the changes, including but not limited to transportation, accommodation and food, will be the responsibility of the traveller.

Health & Safety

Altitude sickness Since we won’t reach a significant elevation, altitude sickness should not be a pressing issue. However, we will take precautions by staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol consumption, and ascending slowly. If you see any symptoms of AMS or have a headache, please contact our guide immediately.
Trail Safety

Our guide will have a well-equipped first-aid kit at all times. Please go through our equipment and medical checklist for better preparedness as the common problems like foot blisters and knee pain can be tackled with proper packing. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, kindly let us know when booking.

Pack your passport, flight tickets, phone, wallet, camera equipment, cash, and all your valuables in your day pack or waist belt. Please don’t bring or carry expensive items like jewellery etc or a large sum of cash while travelling for security reasons.

Insurance It is recommended to get a travel insurance for the trek. This should cover emergency evacuation and medical expenses.
Drinking Water Water safety is very crucial as one can easily contract waterborne diseases (and you don’t want that during your trek). We recommend drinking only boiled water or using one of steriPEN, LifeStraw, or purification tablets during the trek.
Emergency Contacts If you have any issues or emergencies while trekking, please contact the lead guide or anyone from the team. They will help you contact the nearby hospitals, transport, ambulance, police office, army checkpoints, embassy, and even facilitate rescue operations. We will also send you a list of relevant emergency contacts before the trip.

How to pack

The overall baggage limit is 15kgs (33lbs) per passenger, a policy set by the airlines for mountain flights. Excess weight is allowed at an additional expense. However, we recommend not exceeding this weight limit as it should be sufficient for the trek.

During the trek, porters are assigned to carry your bags. One porter carries the luggage of two trekkers in a big duffel bag that the company provides. The maximum weight carried by one porter is 25kgs (55lbs). This means you will pack two bags for your trek: a day bag for yourself and a softshell duffel that goes inside the porter’s bag.

Duffel Bag

A duffel bag is your pack that goes inside the porter’s bag. You can also go for a backpack as long as it is soft-shelled and easy to squeeze in. Each duffel bag can be no more than 75 liters & 10-12 kg per person or 150 liters & 20-25 kg for two people. Everything that you will not need during the walking hours of the day will go in a duffel bag. Do not put your valuables in it, as well as any items like cameras/laptops with a risk of getting crushed.

Day Bag

A day bag is your backpack that you will carry during the trek. Anything that you will need during the day, like rain gear, a warm layer, a water bottle, sunscreen, basic toiletries, your phone, and camera, money, important documents, a pair of gloves, a hat, and a few snacks, goes in this bag. A 35-50 liters bag & 5-6 kgs is your ideal daypack. It is advised to buy a good quality bag with adjustable waist straps, as good load distribution makes all the difference while trekking.

From our experience of organizing over 30 of these events, we know the importance of having everyone follow rules and that no individual is allowed to ruin the experience or worse compromise the safety of other participants. Here are the most important ones:
- If you miss the deadline, you will be subject to Rs. 500 late fees (surcharge on the entry fees). The bib will be handwritten (and my handwriting is a little too tough to the eyes). We cannot make exceptions to this rule, as this is the single deciding factor if the race starts on time.
- For no-shows or late shows, the payment is non-transferable across races and between participants, as all costs will have been incurred.
- Photography and your result is not opt-outs and will be published online. Event photos will be published on Social Media. Your result will be published along with your nationality and age category. All other other data you provide to us will be kept confidential, unless government authorities ask for the same verbally or in written form.
- Absolutely no form of swearing or yelling (we had this misfortune before). There will be kids around, and we want to make sure nobody is exposed to nasty behavior. If you are not content with the race, you can express your concerns in a civil manner, but no form of swearing, shrieking or rowdy behavior will be tolerated at the slightest.
- Make sure your physician clears you for outdoor activities. Snail Trail welcomes and encourages people with all kinds of fitness level, but you need to be in physical shape to finish the race in within the cut-off times (see Schedule section on the website).
- The trail can be steep, flat, undulating, wide, narrow, slippery, rocky, thorny, sandy, muddy, uneven and can also be on the roads on some parts with some traffic. Please be alert at all times, and follow colored ribbons and spray that match the color of your bib.
- The best way to enjoy the Series is to register/pay on time, show up on time (avoid late fees) and follow the trail markings from start to finish. If you take a wrong turn, check the GPS track that you'd load on your phone before starting the race. Any pace is fine.
- All kids 12 years or below must be accompanied by a guardian. If is the guardians responsibility to make sure the kids are safe on the trails and not push them too hard for a medal. The kids must have proper running/hiking gear, including protection from the sun and rain.
- And finally, there will be music playing. Please do not change the music or volume. We had someone play sleazy songs before.
- Snail Trail is a small, recreational trail race/hike that's widely loved, so let's keep it slow, easy and fun on the trails.
